We present a method to analyze spatio-temporal signals
emerging from synergetic systems. The approach relies on an
extremum principle and yields order parameters and enslaved modes
in the vicinity of phase-transition. Spatial modes as well as
their dynamic interaction are obtained simultaneously. We
demonstrate the method by various examples of codimension-1 and -2
instabilities.
Key words: spatio-temporal pattern, instability, phase-transition,
non-equilibrium systems, self-organization
